Things to Know Before Your First Hike
January 15, 2024

Thinking about joining your first hike? That's awesome! Hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy nature, disconnect from stress, and meet new people. Here are five things to keep in mind before you start your adventure.
Choose the Right Difficulty
Always check the hike level. If it's your first time, start with an easy or moderate trail. At Outside Matters, every event description includes a difficulty scale to help you decide.
Wear the Right Shoes
Good hiking shoes are essential. Avoid sneakers with flat soles; choose ones with grip and ankle support to stay safe on rocky paths.
Stay Hydrated
Bring at least 1.5 liters of water. Even in cooler weather, hiking makes you sweat more than you think.
Pack Light but Smart
Carry only what you need: water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket. A heavy backpack will slow you down.
Respect Nature
Stay on the trail, avoid loud music, and never leave trash behind. Hiking is about connecting with nature, not disturbing it.
Remember: Every hiker started once as a beginner. Take your time, enjoy the views, and let the trail teach you.
